What the demand actually is
Canadians mostly do not have floods. They have plumbing failures
The short version
- The word “flood” dominates the writing in this category and not the events.
- Sewer backups, basement water, water heaters and appliance hoses are what Canadians actually deal with.
- That matters practically: a standard policy answers the indoor failures and leaves the two arrival routes to optional endorsements.
- And it changes the advice — the useful checklist is plumbing maintenance, not emergency kit.
Almost every page written about water damage in Canada is written about a disaster. Rising water, sandbags, a family standing in a driveway. It is vivid, it is what stock photography supports, and it describes a small minority of what actually happens.
We went looking at what Canadians actually search for before building this site, and the distribution was lopsided in a way that changed how the whole thing was written. Demand for flood damage in Canada runs at roughly a tenth of demand for basement flooding, and behind both of them sit sewer backups, water heater leaks and washing machine hoses.
In other words: a plumbing failure on a Tuesday, plus a freeze-thaw season.
Why the framing matters practically
This is not a stylistic complaint. Three things change if you write for the ordinary case rather than the dramatic one.
The insurance answer changes. The Insurance Bureau of Canada lists among what a standard Canadian policy covers: sudden or accidental water damage caused by indoor plumbing, heating or air conditioning. Most household water failures land squarely inside that clause. The two that do not — a sewer backing up, and water arriving overland — are optional endorsements you have to buy. So the single most useful thing a Canadian homeowner can know is which of those three categories their situation is in, and that is a question about the source, not about the weather.
The advice changes. If the risk is a disaster, the advice is an emergency plan. If the risk is a hose, the advice is: replace the rubber washing machine hoses, put a drip tray under the water heater, pull the dishwasher out once a year and look behind it, and disconnect the garden hose in October. None of that is exciting. All of it works.
The timeline changes. Health Canada states that mould will begin to grow in an area with excessive moisture within 48 hours. In a disaster you know the clock started. In a slow dishwasher leak behind a cabinet, the 48 hours expired months ago and nobody was counting, which is exactly why the undramatic failures end up costing more than the dramatic ones.
What is actually behind the basement water
The one place the disaster framing partly holds is the basement, and even there the mechanism is more mundane than the pictures suggest.
Toronto publishes that approximately 23 per cent of its older areas are served by combined sewers — one pipe carrying both sewage and stormwater, in places built as much as a century ago. In a combined system, a heavy rainfall does not risk causing a sewage backup as a separate downstream consequence. It is the same event.
So the Canadian urban version of “flooding” is frequently not a watercourse leaving its channel at all. It is the drainage system running backwards for twenty minutes during a thunderstorm, into finished basements that were unfinished storage rooms with a floor drain when the pipes were laid.
That, incidentally, is why municipal programmes across Ontario fund backwater valves, sump pumps and downspout disconnection rather than anything resembling flood defence. The cities know what the mechanism is.
The four things to actually do
Ordered by how much damage they prevent per dollar, which is not the order anybody writes them in.
- Replace the rubber washing machine hoses. They sit under mains pressure for the entire life of the appliance, behind a machine nobody moves. Braided stainless replacements cost very little. This is the one failure on the list that can genuinely flood a floor.
- Disconnect the garden hose every autumn and shut the interior valve to the outdoor tap. A hose left connected holds water against the valve, and the pipe behind it freezes inside the wall.
- Put a drip tray under the water heater, plumbed to a drain if you can. In a finished basement this converts a category of disaster into a nuisance.
- Pull the dishwasher and the fridge out once a year and look. Dark staining on the floor behind them is a leak that has already happened. Soft or swollen chipboard at the base of the cabinet beside a dishwasher is the tell that shows up before anything is visible.
Four battery water alarms, one behind each appliance and one beside the tank, cost less than an hour of a restoration technician’s time.
And the one thing to know before any of it
Whatever the cause, your policy requires you to act to limit further damage once you know about a loss — that is the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s description, and it is a requirement of the policy rather than a courtesy. It starts when you find the water, not when somebody returns your call.
Which sounds like a burden and is actually permission. You are not supposed to sit and watch it spread while you wait to be told it is authorised. Photograph everything first, then stop the water, then get the air moving, and keep every receipt. The seasonality nobody writing about this from elsewhere has to think about
There is one Canadian pattern that does not appear in any of the American or Australian material this subject gets copied from, and it has a calendar.
Freeze-thaw produces two distinct failures, and they look nothing alike.
Frozen supply pipes, which burst when they thaw rather than when they freeze. The water arrives at mains pressure and keeps arriving until somebody closes a valve, so the volume is large and it travels much further than the visible damage suggests — under floors, into wall cavities, down to the level below. This one is covered by a standard policy, with a condition attached that nothing else in this subject has: the Insurance Bureau of Canada lists frozen pipe damage among what is not covered if adequate heating precautions were not maintained. The peril is in; leaving a property unheated is what takes it out.
Ice dams, which are not a plumbing failure at all. Heat escaping from the living space warms the roof deck, snow on the heated part melts, the meltwater runs to the cold overhang beyond the heated envelope and refreezes there. A ridge of ice builds along the eave, water pools behind it, and roofing designed to shed water downhill instead holds it until it works back under the shingles. IBC lists ongoing or repeated ice dam damage among the exclusions, treating it as maintenance. Which it is: the cause is air sealing, insulation and ventilation, in that order, and re-shingling frequently does not fix it.
The reason to know both of these in October rather than in January is that they are the two failures on this page with a deadline. Everything else — the hoses, the dishwasher, the tank — can be dealt with on any Saturday. These two cannot.
The October list
- Disconnect every garden hose and shut the interior valve feeding the outdoor tap. A hose left connected holds water against the valve and the pipe behind it freezes inside the wall.
- If the house will be empty, find out what your own wording requires. Many policies impose specific conditions for vacant or unoccupied properties — maintaining heat, or draining the system, plus somebody checking the property at a stated interval. A furnace that quit on 2 January and was found on 20 January is a very different loss from one found on 3 January.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls during a cold snap. It is free and it lets room heat reach the pipes.
- Look at the attic before the snow arrives. Daylight around the hatch, warm air at the bathroom fan, or insulation thin enough to see joists through are all the cause of next February’s ice dam.
- Know where the main shut-off is. Actually go and look. In the dark, with water running, is the wrong moment to be learning the plumbing.
What this changes about the reading
If you came to this site expecting a page about disasters and found one about washing machine hoses, that is the point. The demand data said one thing, the insurance structure said the same thing, and the municipal programmes — which fund backwater valves and sump pumps rather than anything resembling flood defence — said it a third time.
Canadians have plumbing failures, appliance failures and a drainage system that runs backwards during thunderstorms in older neighbourhoods. Writing about anything else is writing about somebody else’s country.
